Details
The Mobility Autonomy Program (MAP) is a scalable training program we’re piloting in Central Ohio. It aims to help autistic adults get around better and communicate more easily. ASR is working with two other groups: Unmuted Grace (they’ll teach people how to make and use communication tools called AAC devices for free) and Sidewalk Sidekick (they have technology that tracks sidewalk obstacles in real time, which helps people walking or using wheelchairs).
The program has four phases, with two in progress.
Phase 1: Discovery
In phase 1, we’re asking 100 people what kind of training would be most helpful and we’re figuring out how to get the biggest impact from our work. This part has already started and is fully funded.
Activities in phase 1 include
- opportunity mapping,
- building a survey instrument for wide distribution,
- creating discussion guides for focus groups, and
- interviewing potential MAP participants to see what they feel should be included in the training and public education campaign.
Phase 2: Resource Creation
We’ve also started raising funds for phase 2 to create scalable resources including webinars, videos, interactive experiences, and templates for multiple AAC language systems to support using transportation options in Central Ohio, such as public transit, ride shares, driving, bicycling, and mobility apps. These resources will provide foundational transportation knowledge and assistive tech.
